Voidspace
Private rooms for chat, calls and files. Share a code, nobody needs an account.
Voidspace is a private room for working together. Start a room, share the six-character code or the link, and everyone is in from their own browser: chat with Markdown and highlighted code, send files, run a poll, start a voice or video call, or share a screen. Nobody makes an account, and nothing is kept on a server. When the last person leaves, the room is gone.
Peer to peer, with no backend of my own
The site is static files. The browsers find each other through a public PeerJS signalling server and then talk directly over WebRTC in a full mesh, up to eight people with four cameras. A TURN relay (ExpressTURN) carries the traffic only when two devices cannot reach each other directly. Messages, files and calls never touch anything I run.
Without a server, the hard parts move into the browsers. The host is just the peer who joined first: when they leave, every browser works out the same new host on its own, and that peer takes over the room’s public address so new people can still get in. Removals, mutes and the room lock only count when they come from the peer everyone agrees is host.
Encryption you can check
WebRTC is encrypted in transit, but the signalling server sets the connection up, so in theory it could sit in the middle. Voidspace adds its own layer on top: each pair of people derives a key with ECDH, every message is sealed with AES-GCM, and each person can compare a short safety code with anyone in the room. If the codes match, nobody is listening in. Room passwords are checked with a challenge, so the password itself never crosses the wire.
Built to feel like an app
It installs as a PWA, follows the system’s light or dark theme, and speaks English and Danish. On a phone the room is one bar and a message list, like the messaging apps people already know. The composer stays above the keyboard, and the list follows new messages unless you have scrolled up to read.
Screens
-
A room with three people: Markdown, a highlighted code block and a file on its way to everyone.
-
The same room in the dark theme, which follows the system setting.
-
On a phone: one bar like a messaging app, and the file waits for Accept.
-
The front page: start a room, or join one with a six-character code.
